A HUGE SUCCESS BY ANY MEASURE

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND (May 14, 2017) – Metre boat sailors from four corners of the United States and Canada enjoyed a spectacular weekend of racing at METEREFEST NEWPORT 2017. By all accounts, the inaugural regatta for International Rule sailing yachts, held in conjunction with New York Yacht Club’s 163rd Annual Regatta with support from Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Sail Newport was a huge success. Jamie Hilton, METREFEST NEWPORT 2017 Chairman said: “The idea of bringing Metre boat sailors of all different stripes together at one event proved to be more fun than we had even hoped. Sailors and skippers from all 3 classes on hand were very enthused at the event and were universally clamoring as to when and where the next METREFEST will be!”

In the largest fleet of the regatta with 17 entries on the starting line, Dee Smith, US-7 dominated the 2.4mR class chalking up a perfect regatta. Not only did Smith win every race, he led at every single mark rounding. Ben Hall, US-77 placed second overall with 13 pts. and Theodore Green, US-175 finished third overall with 15pts. In Friday’s Around Rose Island Race, Theodore Green, US-175 finished second with Charles Rosenfield, US-142 (Woodstock, CT) in third. At Friday’s METREFEST NEWPORT 2017 dinner, upon accepting his Around the Island prize, Dee Smith suggested staging a 2.4mR World Championship in tandem with the 2019 12mR World Championship in Newport; his idea was met with resounding cheers from the 300+ gathered Metre sailors.

METREFEST 2.4mR overall:

First: US-7, Dee Smith (Annapolis, MD)

Second: US-77, Ben Hall (Tiverton, RI)

Results in the 6mR Class were more mixed. Matt Brook’s Lucie, US-55 won the Around the Island Race on Friday followed by Thomas Rodes’ Discovery, US-109 (Cambridge, MA) in second and William Booth’s Flapper, N-71 in third. It was Booth’s Flapper, N-71 who won the weekend regatta however with a total of only 6 pts.

Nine 12mRs, representing 3 divisions of formula designs spanning 28 years of America’s Cup inspired yacht development, shared a starting line—a very rare occurrence. Dennis Williams’ freshly-restored Defender, US-33 returned to the racecourse after 23 years to win the Modern division in Friday’s Around the Island Race. Also finishing first Around the Island were Kip Curren’s Laura, KZ-5 in the Grand Prix division and Eagle 2019 Syndicate’s Traditional entry American Eagle, US-21.

MetreFest Update, 3/6/17

JamieIMG_0062-cropWe have made tremendous progress with plans for Newport MetreFest 2017, now just 3 months away! The racing schedule is set with 3 days of sailing (June 9–11) for all classes with the New York Yacht Club running races for the 12s, 8s and 6s and Ida Lewis Yacht Club officiating for the large 2.4 Metre fleet.

Docking arrangements are in place for all competitors at Sail Newport’s Fort Adams facilities. The primary objective of MetreFest is to promote all International Rule boats. By having our historic Metre yachts docked en masse we hope to create a powerful impression and garner exposure benefiting all of our Classes. We also envision a fun festival atmosphere among the competitors and an opportunity to engage the public with an up-close look at our historic metre boats before and after racing.

The fun begins on Thursday night with a Welcome part at Ida Lewis Yacht Club, on Friday evening Sail Newport will be our host with a cocktail party adjacent to our docked racing fleet. All MetreFest participants are invited to New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta party on Saturday night and again for Sunday’s prize-giving, both held at Harbour Court. All in all, a robust but convenient social schedule for participants and their guests.

We continue to field inquires through our MetreFest website and Facebook page. Please help us continue to spread the word by sharing our links with your sailing friends and social outlets. And if you are able to volunteer prior to or during the event, please contact me. With your help, we’ll kick off the 2017 sailing season with a spectacular showing at Newport MetreFest! — Jamie Hilton

Welcome to Newport MetreFest!

Welcome to MetreFest,  an exciting new regatta for International Rule sailing yachts including 2.4mR, 6mR, 8mR and 12mRs. Three days of racing, hosted by New York Yacht Club, with support from Ida Lewis Yacht Club and Sail Newport, will be run in conjunction with NYYC’s Annual Regatta from June 9-11, 2017. Sail Newport will provide dockage for all of the boats at their Fort Adams facility, enabling both sailors and spectators to walk the docks and appreciate the formula designs from vintage through more modern boats up close. An opening social event, proximate to the docked fleet at Fort Adams, is scheduled for the evening of June 8. Regatta and Social event registration details for participants will follow. Admission for the public to walk the docks (before and after racing daily) will be free of charge.
